Dr. Blumberg, Dr. Cairns and myself gave a lecture on November 7th, 2010 at the Imperial Point Medical Center. The topic of spinal stenosis was discussed in detail. The diagnosis, non surgical, surgical and neurostimualtory treatments were discussed. We had over 85 attendees and the lecture was scheduled for an hour. With the abundance of questions asked, the entire presentation lasted almost 2 hours.

We discussed why a high field MRI is needed to image the spine, while fluoroscopy is necessary for spinal injections, how minimally invasive surgeries have revolutionized spine surgery, as well as the latest advances in spinal cord stimulation.

After the conclusion of the lecture when all questions were answered, Imperial Point Medical Center held a WII bowling tournament. I hope none of our attendees hurt their backs while competing!

On November the 4th, 2010, I had the opportunity to speak to the prestigious Tower Club Forum on the topic of back pathology. The breakfast meeting was sponsored by our friends at Broward Health.

Many of Fort Lauderdale’s business leaders, political representatives from both parties as well as Michael Putney from Local Channel 10 were in attendance. The topic of back discomfort was chosen as it is such a common problem. In fact, over 80% of the United States population will suffer from back distress some time in their lives.

While sadly I had to leave the meeting directly after my talk, I was informed that the lecture proved to be very informative and was well received. I look forward to future meetings with the Tower Club Forum.

When I came to Fort Lauderdale in 2000 I was the first fellowship trained physiatrist in the county. There were about seven other physicians in five locations who were practicing different aspects of management in the area; we all knew who each other were and shared a variety of patients. Over the next seven years this number ebbed and flowed but never exceeded 10-12 legitimate practitioners. Starting in 2007 I began to notice an increase of Clinic signs throughout the county and at last count there were 122 Clinics registered in the county.
Many of these clinics Pill Mills are not owned by physicians, and the employed physicians have no formal training in Management. Many are retired physicians who have come out of retirement to make some extra money. These clinics are generally treating patients with pills only, and sometimes extremely high doses of dangerous medications. This has resulted in disastrous results.
There are as of last count 10.4 patients dying per day due to prescription drug overdose. I dare to say if 10 manatees died per day there would be an uproar in the media. The percentage of overdose deaths in Broward County are 80% prescription drugs and 20% heroine. The ratios are reversed in Dade and Palm Beach counties.

This is my first blog entry so I thought I would give some background info about myself and our group. I was born a Navy brat in Norfolk Va. and moved to Melbourne Fl. In 1971. I attended the University of Florida where I graduated with both a Bachelors and Masters Degree in Exercise Physiology. I met my wife while attending UF and we have been married for over 20 years. We have 2 wonderful children.
I attended Nova Southeastern University for medical school. I was blessed to do a residency at the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, and my fellowship through Emory University. We were very eager to return to sunny South Florida after the long cold winters in the windy city. (The first January that I was there; there was a total of 14 minutes of sunlight the entire month—I missed them all)
Returning to Florida was always our goal and it allowed me to be the first fellowship trained Interventional Physiatrist in Broward County. Joining forces with Dr. Kalman Blumberg, who is fellowship trained in spine surgery and Dr. Kevin Cairns who is fellowship trained in both EMG & Nerve Conduction studies as well as Interventional Physiatry, has been a wonderful experience. We are the only group of three physicians who are fellowship trained in diagnosing and treating complex spinal conditions in the area.
I look forward to blogging with you, and hope you will find it informative, useful, and occasionally funny.
